Vagaries by Neil Hood aka Nulsh

I have always loved spontaneous drawing, and especially like when a piece creates itself. This is not always aligned when doing commissioned work and I have struck a decent balance between planning and spontaneity. But too much planning still gives me the heeby jeebies!

And then there are the times when I see an image fully formed in my head, usually the result of a dream. A small drawing book is my constant companion – never know when the next inspiration will strike.

Drawing is important to me and I have developed a style that reduces down to simple linework as much as possible. I still get great enjoyment from seeing ink lines on paper.

That said, drawing is only the half of it, I am equally immersed in storytelling. I am at my most content when I am making stuff up.

I love anything to do with people and all our vagaries. Often when I draw a character, I start to imagine their life and history.

Born and raised in and around Edinburgh. Earliest memory is of drawing on the fly pages of books with a crayon and getting a row from my mum. Been freelancing as an illustrator since 17 years of age. Have covered all areas of illustration from books & magazines to video games. Mainly traditional skills, especially pen drawing, but have experience of 2D and 3D software to create images and animation. But it all starts with drawing for me! Currently residing in Glasgow, and still drawing on the fly pages pf books with crayon. Mum has come to terms with it.
