“The highest result of education is tolerance” Helen Keller was known to have said. To be educated, in essence, is to have reached a certain level of knowledge. Is it important where that source of knowledge stems from? It may be significant or life changing stuff or a simple gesture from another. Some in life may recall the gratitude of a fellow passenger when a seat on the local transport is given to them and take a lesson from it, some may remember verbatim their first University lecture.

What it is about Edinburgh University that attracts students? The history of graduate pioneers, entrepreneurs and scientists. Indeed it was Darwin’s choice of educational institution although he left to pursue something rather significant…So there is all that history and no denying that Edinburgh has its place on the map. Here is why:

Student Lifestyle

Gone, though, are the days of having your head stuck in a book twenty four hours per day. Student life is about balance. Edinburgh, a vibrant cosmopolitan city with quite a small population comparatively, offers just that. Many claim that often in Edinburgh you may struggle to actually hear a Scottish accent! What a compliment to the great city having a melting pot of people residing there. A warm welcome awaits.

LOCATION

For students who have made the journey to Edinburgh and want to explore further a-field, well, no problem there with London just four hours away by train and Glasgow only forty minutes away. Edinburgh can offer a calm space to walk with green areas such as the meadows and Arthurs seat to distress from dissertations and lectures. What’s more, the beach is there. A city with an extinct volcano, a coast line and a bustling new town can do no wrong.

SOCIAL LIFE

The importance of this cannot be underestimated! Fresher’s week, student unions and pub life. Students at Edinburgh will encounter fellow students from all over the world and this is great for friendship and contacts as writing long assignments can sometimes be lonely work and well, we all need a break.

NETWORKING

It is never too early to think of a future career path – Edinburgh will host future students of business, organisations and scientific break-through. If under-graduates envisage being part of something like this they are in the right city.

FACILITIES

There is of course the newly revamped Royal Commonwealth sports centre where students can offload and potentially burn off last night’s take out or beer. Art galleries and exhibitions as well as beautiful architecture give the city a creative edge.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS?

It is not all partying and socializing of course. Some find the work demanding, stressful and too much. It may not be the right time for a percentage of students and support is provided via online advice services and a free phone line.

AND FINALLY GRADUATION….

There may be a hard earned degree in hand but probably the whole experience was a knowledgeable and fun one which can be looked back on, or studied further. Edinburgh may win students over but remember education is everywhere…
