DJ Andy Joyce brought Symphonic Ibiza to Edinburgh last night, kicking off the Hogmanay celebrations alongside the Torchlight Procession. I was unsure what to expect, whether the evening would be a serene orchestra interpretation or a club night featuring a lone violin. It was neither… or maybe both. The mixture of beautiful setting, an amazing light-show, an entertaining conductor and rousing DJ made the evening exceed my expectations, tenfold. A bubble away from the cold Edinburgh night, the audience danced, laughed and drank like they were really in Ibiza. Transforming the historic McEwan Hall into an almost rave-like experience, the night retained the vibe of classic dance hits while incorporating the ambience and intensity of a live orchestra.

Part of the joy of the evening was the unexpected element of the event. The amount of people who showed up seemed to surprise even the staff, with the entire downstairs of the hall full of people dancing and singing. Clearly relishing the New Year’s spirit, and not willing to save themselves for the main Hogmanay events, the Edinburgh crowd had as much to do with the atmosphere as the musicians did. The mix of energetic performers and audience members soaking up nostalgic hits and current beats created a harmony of itself, the entire hall working together to create something special. Transporting the revellers to a tropical island, Symphonic Ibiza was a totally unique and unexpected way to celebrate Hogmanay.
