The Edinburgh University Music Society performed their Symphony Orchestra Christmas Concert on the 3rd of December at Reid Concert Hall. A perfect welcoming of December and the Christmas run-up, they ask only for donations upon entry and even offered mince pies at a post-concert reception. Tucked behind Teviot House, the University society gave a rousing, comforting and fully festive hour long performance featuring Hollywood film classics, family favourites, and traditional carols. The conductor, Russell Cowieson, interspersed beautiful compositions with heartfelt stories about the musical backgrounds of some of the world’s most famous Christmas songs.

A heartwarming performance of young talent and enthusiasm mixed with the cosy tidings of the Christmas season, the Music Society’s rendition was a thoroughly enjoyable break from the chaos of Christmas markets and Princes Street shopping – and the free mince pie didn’t hurt!
