Co-programmed by Glasgow Film and GYFF Young Programmers aged 15-19, who are mentored through a summer school, the festival will open with a special screening of Tom George’s comedic murder mystery See How They Run. Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) take on a puzzling whodunnit against the glamorous backdrop of the 1950s theatre underground. Based on the world’s longest-running play, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, the film boasts stunning production design and an impressive ensemble cast including Adrian Brody, David Oyelowo, Ruth Wilson and Reece Shearsmith.
The festival will close with a screening of Baz Luhrmann’s musical classic Moulin Rouge! In Paris, 1899 bohemian writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) falls in love with courtesan and aspiring actress, Satine (Nicole Kidman). As Satine’s health deteriorates, a jealous Duke (Richard Roxburgh) seeks to tear the lovers apart. With an iconic soundtrack featuring tracks by David Bowie, Madonna and Elton John, this bombastic spectacle remains a big screen experience unlike any other.
The wider programme includes Paul Morris’s microbudget gangland comedy Angry Young Men, and Kim Hopkins’ documentary on Britain’s longest-running amateur filmmaking club A Bunch Of Amateurs, along with a selection of modern classics such as Moonlight, Napoleon Dynamite and Corpse Bride.

When curating our festival we tried to think about film choices that really fit our lens and made them truly worth being shown in the GFT. It was important to us that our film choices represented voices that we feel aren’t shown enough in cinema. We also thought it important to show themes of ‘chosen family’ and ‘community’ in our films.
One thing we are looking forward to is seeing films we would love to see in cinema and how the Behind the Scenes Labs in association with BFI Film Academy industry events turn out, as we worked hard to make them feel special. We’re excited for our Opening Gala See How They Run and our Closing Gala Moulin Rouge! which have some special surprises in store for our audience.
We’ve managed to pick a range of films that will appeal to all groups of people and we think feel fresh to see again on the big screen. Classics such as Corpse Bride and Napoleon Dynamite are sure to bring together communities who adore them.
One thing we found ourselves focusing on was the sense of passion behind filmmaking. One of our first picks was the touching documentary A Bunch of Amateurs focusing on a group of older filmmakers who have kept their admiration for the medium throughout the years. This documentary pairs nicely with another pick of ours: Angry Young Men, the directorial debut of filmmaker Paul Morris, who has proven that you don’t need studio backing to create an interesting take on film.

This year sees the return of Behind the Scenes, an industry programme for 15-25 year olds funded by BFI Film Academy through National Lottery funding. Behind the Scenes will offer free-to-attend workshops and events across the weekend of 16-18 September. The programme, designed for young adults who are keen to pursue a career in the film industry, will include Day in the Life of a Director with Angry Young Men director Paul Morris; Costume in Cinema with expert Casci Ritchie; and a workshop on Screenwriting for Beginners with Niamh McKeown. There will also be opportunities to learn about the art of the cinematographer, the importance of film scores and their impact on cinema and the techniques and strategies of film trailers, as well as a panel on women in the film industry, both on screen and behind the camera.
