One of the most innovative youth film festivals in Europe, Glasgow Youth Film Festival (GYFF) returns from 13 – 15 September 2019, plus GYFF19 will host the festival’s first Careers Day. Co-programmed by Glasgow Film and GYFF Young Programmers aged 15 -19, who are mentored on a year-round basis, the festival presents an outstanding range of international films and two free to attend creative workshops for young people, Into Industry: Finding Your Feet in Film and A Day in the Director’s Life.
Glasgow Youth Film Festival will host a Careers in Film Day on Thursday 12 September, curated especially for S4 – S6 pupils across Glasgow. At the event, pupils will have the chance to participate in hands-on workshops and receive invaluable career advice from professionals for a successful career in the ever-growing Scottish film industry. The event will feature a keynote speech from Alan McDonald, a former High School teacher, script consultant on CBBC shows and the screenwriter of GFF18 Opening Gala Anna and the Apocalypse.
Friday 13 September
Opening the 11th edition of Glasgow Youth Film Festival is a special preview screening of The Farewell, a heartfelt and uplifting tale from writer/director Lulu Wang, starring Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians). Following that, the ultimate 1980s teen cult classic Heathers takes to the big screen as GYFF19’s special late night screening.
Saturday 14 September
The GYFF Young Programmers take over GFT’s weekly Saturday morning family screening slot, Take 2, and present a screening of Coraline, the animated dark fairy-tale based on the novella of the same name by Neil Gaiman. Curated by the Young Programmers in association with Scotland Loves Anime, Gorô Taniguchi’s sequel to the original series, the UK premiere of new anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;Surrection also screens. On Saturday evening, GYFF19 presents the Scottish premiere of Phoenix, an affecting Norwegian film that turns the teen coming-of-age drama on its head. The second day of GYFF19 will complete with the glittering UK premiere screening of uplifting documentary Drag Kids – get ready for wigs, vogue-ing and a whole lot of Lady Gaga tunes…
Sunday 15 September
Kicking off the final day of GYFF19 is the French cosmic coming-of-age comedy Stars by the Pound. Bring the whole family for an afternoon adventure at Family Gala: Fantastic Mr Fox at Maryhill Burgh Halls (family tickets available), then settle back at GFT for GYFF: ShortListed, a selection of short films by young filmmakers from Scotland and beyond, curated by the Young Programmers. In the evening, fresh from its Scottish Premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival, GYFF screens triumphant documentary The Biggest Little Farm, followed by a Skype Q&A with some very special guests. To close the 11th GYFF, it’s time to take on some evil exes at our immersive pop-up screening of Edgar Wright’s love letter to video games, Scott Pilgrim vs The World at Maryhill Burgh Halls, with added activities designed for the audience to Power Up!
