Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) has announced the line-up of films that audiences will be able to enjoy on the big screen throughout September. As one of only a few independent cinemas in Scotland to have re-opened – with enhanced safety measures – following five months of closure due to Covid-19 regulations, GFT offers film lovers the chance to once again watch the best international and local new releases, as well as cult classics and family favourites, all on the big screen.

GFT is operated by Glasgow Film, an educational charity which also runs the award-winning Glasgow Film Festival and Glasgow Youth Film Festival. GFT is the city’s original independent arthouse cinema and the home of film in Glasgow.

The cinema re-opened its doors on Monday 31 August after more than five months of closure, with an initial line-up packed full of new releases including Tenet, Proxima, Make Up, Les Misérables and Away.

GFT is known for its carefully curated mix of new releases, classic films and international cinema, and the September programme is no different. Film fans who have managed to get their hands on the limited number of tickets available for Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables will relish the chance to see its perfect companion, modern classic La Haine, in a new 4K restoration. Other classics include three titles voted for by GFT customers in an online poll: Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner: The Final Cut and the big screen thrill-ride that is Jaws.

New releases include Real, an authentic love story from actor turned writer-director Aki Omoshaybi, girlhood film Rocks, sumptuous epic The Lady in the Portrait set in the 18th century imperial court of China, and Nocturnal, the story of a cynical schoolgirl who builds a secret friendship with an older man played by Cosmo Jarvis. Those who miss out on tickets for GFT’s special preview screening of Max Richter’s Sleep will have another chance to catch this meditative documentary from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September.

The phenomenon that is Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite will return to the big screen in a reworked black and white version, which had its UK premiere at Glasgow Film Festival earlier this year, and audiences will also have the chance to enjoy the director’s haunting sophomore feature, Memories of a Murder, in a brand new 4K restoration.

A special screening of David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet on Monday 28 September will be followed by an exclusive cinema-only recorded Q&A with David Attenborough and Michael Palin.

Glasgow Film has also announced the programme for GYFF Presents, a miniature film festival taking place from 18 to 20 September in place of this year’s Glasgow Youth Film Festival. Curated by Glasgow Film’s Youth Board, the line-up includes a special preview screening of Miss Juneteenth, new release Rocks followed by a recorded Q&A with the cast, a late night screening of cult classic Donnie Darko, and a welcome chance to re-watch family classic Back to the Future on the big screen.

GFT has also announced a one-off screening of Idiot Prayer – Nick Cave Alone at Alexandra Palace on Thursday 5 November, which sees Nick Cave play his songs at the piano in a rarely-seen stripped back form, from early Bad Seeds and Grinderman, right through to the most recent Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds album, Ghosteen. Tickets for this screening will go on sale on Thursday 10 September at 10.00am.

GFT is following all Scottish Government health and safety regulations relating to Covid-19. This means reduced seating capacity in the cinema with seats kept vacant to allow safe social distancing of customers, social distancing measures such as one-way systems throughout the building, and longer breaks between screenings to allow extra time for cleaning.
