Batman has issues – he is conceited and wants the limelight to himself. He cannot express emotions and needs no one to complete him. Despite this we cannot help but love him as he has been around too long and we feel a sense of concern for him – will anyone win his heart? Chris Mackay takes us on a thrilling journey through Gotham city and we witness Batman and The Joker taking each other on.

Batman seems to be falling for head of the police department and we have no doubt when we hear the lyrics ‘I just died in your arms tonight’ as he looks at her that his bat heart is beating fast. There is a hitch however, Barbara believes that there is no need for Batman anymore. Indeed Gotham city residents can keep control of crime rates without the intervention of Batman, his days are over it would seem.

Bruce Wayne the social billionaire is so smitten by Barbara that he allows a young orphan to talk his way into adoption. Dick is comical, persistent and a huge Batman fan. Before he has the honour of becoming Robin he has to put up with Bruce/ Batman rejecting him, sending him home and refusing hugs. Batman has plans though and decides to use Dick to execute them. They embark on a huge adventure and the future Robin pleases Batman with his amazing abilities.

There is no shortage of comedy as we are privy to Batman meeting with Superman and finding that Superman is surrounded with other superhero friends as opposed to Batman who has lonely nights in contemplating family photos. Dick along with Batman manages to get the projector to send the Joker to the ‘Phantom Zone’. Unknown to Batman, The Joker has a plan of action – he wants to collaborate with the other scoundrels sent to the ‘Phantom Zone’ in taking over Gotham City.

There are recurring themes throughout the film including the relationship between Batman and The Joker. Batman tolerates him however the Joker seeks to be hated in order to feel significant. Batman has to swallow his pride during the clash and ask The Joker for assistance in saving Gotham City. The Joker of course thrives on feeling needed and complies – the fragile plates beneath Gotham City meet once again and it is all thanks to Batman, his new found family and The Joker.

Batman issues code names and ‘Robin’ and ‘Bat girl’ are born. Batman learns an important lesson as he realises he is more productive with others rather than saving the City on his own. Not only that – he shows a new appreciation for his Butler whom he considers to be a father figure. His new family help him shift gear towards a more inclusive, warm environment and we see them enjoying movies together as in actual movie shots which are cleverly done.

An excellent action packed adventure although predictable gives us a reason to laugh out loud – it is funny, full of amusing quotes and only slightly rude. Morally, it sends the right message, togetherness beats being alone. Oh, and the password entrance to his residence ‘Iron man sucks’ is not to be missed.
