A Canadian sex comedy from the pen of Jonas Chernick (Ashgrove, James vs. His Future Self). Married couple Josh (played by Chernick) and Emma (Emily Hampshire) start to fret that they no longer have sexual feelings towards each other but aren’t quite ready to be a pair of comfy slippers yet.

When their two daughters head off to winter camp (this is Canada, are you serious?), the couple are quickly faced with the realisation that while their marriage is good, the sex is missing. They start to imagine everyone else is having a ball and plan some outrageous activities to liven things up. You can probably see the trajectory of the film from here -with embarrassing situations, seedy sex clubs and attempts at threesomes with acquaintances cropping up, only to make the couple realise what is most important to them.

It is directed with precision by Sean Garrity but the script is loose and natural – which is very much in the previous style of Jonas Chernick’s Ashgrove, where actors are encouraged to adlib within the confines of a scene. This makes the characters sound ordinary and relatable. Jonas is great as the sexually insecure husband, and the minor characters in the film such as Gray Powell as Emma’s ex boyfriend with no verbal filter, and Lily Gao as Josh’s sexy coworker, really stand out.

I’m not a fan of sex comedies as a rule but there are some laughs in The End of Sex. Glasgow Film Festival was the International Premiere.
